Uttarakhand’s New Rule for Travelers: Carry a Dustbin or Face Consequences
State Implements Strict Measures to Combat Littering Along Tourist Routes

Traveling to Uttarakhand by car? You must carry a dustbin or garbage bag with you. In a decisive move to tackle littering, the Uttarakhand government has introduced a new regulation requiring all vehicles entering the state to carry dustbins or garbage bags. This rule is aimed at preserving the pristine beauty of Uttarakhand and maintaining cleanliness along key routes and tourist destinations.
The state transport department will conduct inspections at all entry points to ensure compliance. Vehicle owners must present required documents, including a valid RC, insurance paper, fitness certificate, pollution certificate, and valid permits when issuing trip cards online or at state entry points. This measure is a step towards improving waste management and ensuring a cleaner environment in Uttarakhand.
Despite various initiatives by NGOs and social organizations, littering has remained a persistent issue, particularly along the Char Dham route and near popular tourist spots such as Mussoorie, Dehradun, and Nainital. Heaps of garbage have been frequently observed, prompting the state government to take stricter measures.
Chief Secretary Radha Raturi emphasized the responsibility of tourists, tour operators, travel agencies, and drivers in upholding the state’s cleanliness. Letters have been sent to the transport commissioners of neighboring states, urging them to enforce this new rule for vehicles entering Uttarakhand.
This regulation is not just about compliance but fostering a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility among travelers. The authorities believe these steps will significantly reduce roadside littering and enhance the overall travel experience for tourists.
As Uttarakhand continues to welcome travelers from across the country, these new regulations aim to ensure that the state’s natural beauty remains unspoiled. Let us all do our part in maintaining the cleanliness and charm of this beautiful region.
